Why AEO Is the Easiest Marketing Opportunity Right Now

AEO gives smaller brands an early chance to earn AI search visibility while answer engines are still deciding what sources to trust.

Because it is new. AI search engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI results have not locked in their ranking rules yet, which means the barrier to getting seen is lower than it has been in search for two decades. If you want to be the answer an AI gives when someone asks for a business like yours, this is the easiest window you will ever get, and it will not stay open.

I say this as someone who has bet my whole company on it. I run an AEO studio, and the reason I went all in is simple. Search engine optimization has had more than twenty years to mature. It is crowded, expensive, and dominated by companies with huge budgets and decades of backlinks. Answer engine optimization is about three years old. The giants have not run away with it yet. A business that moves now, working with a specialist studio like Escape Web Development, can win spots right now that would take years and a fortune to touch in traditional Google SEO.

Here is why that gap exists, and why it is closing.

SEO is a solved game. AEO is not.

Google has spent over twenty years refining how it ranks pages. Everyone knows the playbook, everyone is running it, and the top of the results is a knife fight between companies who have been building authority since before some of their competitors existed. Breaking in is slow and costly by design.

AI search has none of that history. The engines are still figuring out what to trust and how to weigh it. They change their minds, sometimes overnight. That instability sounds risky, but it is actually the opportunity. When the rules are not settled, the incumbents have no permanent advantage, and a sharp, fast-moving player can get cited alongside or ahead of far bigger names.

The rules really are still being written

If you want proof of how young and unsettled this is, look at what just happened. In August 2026, ChatGPT’s citations of Reddit collapsed almost overnight, dropping around 86 percent, after OpenAI changed how the model searches. Reddit had been one of its most-quoted sources. Then, within days, it nearly vanished, and official documentation and brand sources rose to take its place. YouTube, TikTok, and LinkedIn citations dropped hard in the same stretch.

Nobody outside OpenAI saw it coming, and the whole landscape shifted in a week. In mature SEO, a change that big would take years. In AEO it took days. That is what an unsettled market looks like, and it is exactly why now is the moment to be in it.

The mistake most SEO companies are making

Here is the part that separates who wins from who gets left behind. Most SEO firms found a method that worked years ago and they have been running it on repeat ever since. That works in a slow, settled game. It is fatal in AEO.

When the ground moves monthly, the agency that “figured it out” last year is already behind. The Reddit collapse is a perfect example. Anyone who built a strategy around getting mentioned on Reddit for ChatGPT visibility woke up one morning to a strategy that no longer worked. The ones who noticed and adjusted stayed visible. The ones who did not are still wondering where their citations went.

Adaptability is the actual advantage here, not any single tactic. The winning approach is to treat AEO as a moving target, watch what the engines are doing, and adjust the moment they shift. That is the entire reason I position my company the way I do. It is not about knowing one trick. It is about staying at the front of a field that reinvents itself every few months.

What to do while the window is open

You do not need a huge budget to take advantage of this. You need to move now and stay current.

Build a site that machines can actually read, with server-rendered content, real structure, schema markup, and answer-first pages that respond directly to the questions people ask. Get your name into the trusted third-party sources the engines lean on, and keep your details consistent everywhere so you read as one clear entity. Then, and this is the part almost nobody does, keep watching. Track which sources each AI engine is citing, notice when it shifts, and adjust. The Reddit change will not be the last one.

Do that and you can claim visibility in AI search that would be nearly impossible to win in traditional search today. The engines are still deciding who to trust. You want to be an easy, obvious, well-structured answer while they are still making up their minds.

The window closes

Every easy marketing channel eventually gets crowded and expensive. Search did. Social did. Paid ads did. AEO will too, once the engines settle and the big players pile in. Right now it is early, it is winnable, and the rules are still soft.

The businesses that win it will not be the ones with the biggest budgets. They will be the ones who showed up early and kept adapting while everyone else was still optimizing for a version of search that AI already moved past.
